As with most things parent related, choosing snacks for kids is a bit of a balancing act. You want variety and to find things they like but you want to try and stay healthy where you can. Some of our favourites at the moment include:
- Pitta bread slices and hummus (Warning: this one gets messy when you have a toddler)
- Banana slices on rye bread
- Peanut butter on celery sticks
- Marmite and cheese on toast (*shudder* there’s no accounting for taste, hey!)
- Those crazy cheese string things
- Raisins, raisins and more raisins
Both boys love crisps but I try not to buy them too often. I just think they are too greasy but equally I don’t want to be one of ‘those’ mums breaking out the organic cucumber slices when their kids really want pizza. Walkers Mighty Lights could be just the compromise we’re all looking for so we were very glad to be asked to review some recently. They are described thus:
With 30% less fat than standard crisps, Mighty Lights are perfect for kids’ lunchboxes. They are tasty, ridged crisps that come in three flavours – roast chicken, cheese and onion and lightly salted. All the flavours are suitable for vegetarians, and are available in shops nationwide. They’re made from real potatoes with no artificial colours or preservatives- and they’re a source of fibre.
We were sent some of each flavour to try out which is lucky as I’m a ready salted kind of girl, the boys love cheese and onion and Hubs likes all the meaty flavours. It’s safe to say they went down well and T has been found in the kitchen on numerous occasions attempting to help himself to another packet.
As you can see from the pictures, E’s first order of business was to see whether they could be effectively contained in a wrap (which is ‘like a sandwich but cooler’ apparently) where as T just thought it was hysterical that I had given him ‘wonky’ crisps, by which I assume he meant ridged but who can tell with a toddler.
You can tell immediately that they are lower in fat than normal crisps as they don’t leave your fingers and lips greasy. I was also happy to see the total calories in a bag were only 114, much less than a normal pack and that they were 25g in size, plenty for a snack for me or to split between the boys, rather than the 30g or 35g you often see. Lets be honest you never end up leaving some in the bag, do you!
Flavour-wise the boys loved both the Cheese & Onion and the Chicken flavour as did Hubs. I found them nice but a little strong but as I said I prefer plain crisps. Because of that my only complaint would be that they have chosen to add extra flavouring to the ready salted crisps, a sort of slightly herby, oniony flavour which is actually quite pleasant but I’d rather they were just salty.
Overall Walkers Mighty Lights have been a big hit in the Yellow Days household and I’d certainly buy them over normal crisps for the boys in the future.
[Note: We were sent the crisps free of charge for the purpose of review and were compensated for our time. All thought are my own]
