Articulate has been one of our favourite family board games for years, regularly bringing out the our competitive sides here at Yellow Days Towers. We’re obviously not the only fans as Articulate has enjoyed an enviable non-stop run in the top UK Adult Games charts ever since its release in 1992!
Now the fun can be extended to the little ones with a new version, Articulate for Kids, and we’ve been trying it out as a family this week. Compiled by an educational specialist, Articulate for Kids is the same fast moving, lively and thrilling fun as the adult version – providing youngsters with the perfect opportunity to practice their communication skills, while learning new words and expressing themselves fluently and confidently.
Complete with its own attractively designed board, Articulate for Kids can be played by a group of children by themselves (or with a parent), or alongside Articulate! – for hours of multi-generational family fun. There are more than 300 cards with over 2,000 entries in the same six categories as the original Articulate! – Object, Nature, Person, Action, World and Random.
GAMEPLAY
The more players per team the better! Game play follows the same simple format as the adult version… In each round, the teams divide their members into ‘Describers’ and ‘Guessers’. The timer is started, and the Describers take it in turns to describe their way through as many question card entries, from the different categories, as possible to their team members – the Guessers – within a 30-second time limit.
Each team moves its counters around the board, based on the number of words correctly identified – and the object of the game is to reach the FINISH segment before the opposing team. There are clear Description Rules included in the Instructions. For example, Describers mustn’t give hints such as ‘begins with’ and ‘sounds like’…
First and foremost, Articulate for Kids is excellent fun for youngsters aged 6 and upwards to enjoy with friends and family. Many educationalists also choose to incorporate the game into entertaining learning strategies in the classroom to promote speaking skills – adapting game play according to small or larger numbers of children in play.
There’s no doubt that children will have lots of fun and also experience a sense of fulfilment – digging deep to describe people, words and phrases as diverse as Mo Farah and Prince George, Nemo and a Fairy, a Piglet, the Daleks, a Jigsaw and a Cuckoo. The game provides a superb platform to encourage vocabulary extension and distinct, clear and confident speech, as well as effective communication among children of all abilities – particularly those who are in need of a fun confidence boost.
Articulate for Kids is always a brilliant talking point, where everyone’s a winner! We’ve had such a good time trying it out this week and now you can have the chance to win your own copy.
