We do the same as Andrea. We pack lots of different snacks to offer something new every time and pray for naps 😉 I also tell Amy to wave good bye to all the cars she sees – sneaky, but she’s too polite to not do it, haha 😉 x
We each pick a colour, and the one who spots the most cars in that colour is the winner. Usually good for at least an hour. Sometimes I make up bags of prizes – like party bags with crayons, a small toy and some sweets – and give out a first, second and third prize at the end of the game.
We used to have travel bags too! They would get really excited about packing it ready for the trip. I think making the journey part of the holiday is important too, we used to plan stops with fun things to do or see along the way. The long trip to the north of Scotland was always started at 3 in the morning while they were still asleep, that way the most of the trip was over before they even noticed!
Great post! I so wish I’d read it before driving to Devon for our holiday. We got our first ‘Are we nearly there yet when we pulled off the drive’. 5.5 hours later…
I love the idea of the backpack! I tend to pack lots of snacks and if possible with Sophie being so young we plan car journeys over nap times.
Snacks are definitely key to keeping the boys chirpy.

Oooo, that’s sneaky! I like it!
I like the idea of stocking filler type goodies. We go through the alphabet with other other cars’ number plates. Your journeys sound quite civilized!
That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely get E started on that next time!

Ahh, the element of competition never hurts!
snacks are just as crucial for adults 🙂
Great tips here, I like the special bags idea.
Thanks Emma, they have made travelling much smoother.
We always have a little picnic if traveling a fair distance, just incase x
Food is always more fun eaten outside!
I love the idea of packing lots of little snacks in pots!

We have a tub of books in the car for these things but a bag is a great idea!

Great tips, especially the small drinks otherwise they only need the toilet more, and the ditching the radio – it only drifts out and needs retuning!
I used to pack bags like that for my eldest 2..the youngest just wants to play on his siblings electrical devices though!
Great tips. Will have to give some of them a try.
